We spent the day in Tongli yesterday, a canal village at 80 km west of Shanghai (2 hours by car). It takes a lot of time to get out of the city, after that it was quite a smooth drive.It was lovely to see a bit of rural landscape again on our way to Tongli. I am.... not bored but sometimes really overwhelmed by living in this new country and culture. Before leaving my life in NL I was afraid that I would be bored and would have nothing to do after 18 years of working and here not having anything like that. On the contrary, no time to get bored! Since March of this year Barbie has its first flagstore and it's in Shanghai. Mattel opened this store to celebrate Barbie's 50th birthday. It's the biggest Barbie store in the world and with its 6(!) floors it looks so huge! I already knew that I wanted to go there as soon as I heard about it ;-). We have a house and we like it :-). A lot of people in Shanghai live in so called compounds and so do we. Ours has six buildings and some green in the middle. Most compounds have a clubhouse with the reception and some do have a gym, a pool, cafe... whatever they think is needed. Ours is quite simple but it wasn't really our priority.
