Tidying up the finances when someone goes into a nursing home

From Foreign Perspectives, 5 month ago, Read 0 times. Similar articles

Mum’s journey into a nursing home was largely unplanned for and constantly suffering from delays on the part of social services but she’s been there for several months now. That’s created a much greater involvement with social services and social security than we’ve had up to now and it’s something of a nightmare on the whole. First off, the financial assessment people want a whole bunch of information about her finances. That sounded like it would be simple when... Read more

Analysing the ED209 course results

From Foreign Perspectives, 2 year ago, Read 0 times. Similar articles

Now that I’ve come across the overall results for ED209 I’m finding that they’re quite fascinating reading. For a start, despite everyone knowing about one of the questions in advance, 7 people didn’t answer it! As expected, most people did the questions on the first two books as the third was a) perceived as harder than the other two and b) much thicker than them. In fact, over twice the number did the other questions and a mere 15% did the question on categorisation... Read more

Success with Child Development (ED209)!

From Foreign Perspectives, 2 year ago, Read 0 times. Similar articles

The exam result wasn’t supposed to be in until Friday but the scary message “course result” was there this evening. Somehow, no matter how confident you are, course results are always something of an unknown quantity and therefore scary. As it turned out, I did even better than I was expecting to and slightly better than I’d been doing in the assignments which is exactly what’s been happening for the last few years. Also on the OU front, the course texts for the... Read more

The builder's coming!

From Foreign Perspectives, 2 year ago, Read 0 times. Similar articles

We’ve been trying to get a new roof on the kitchen extension since way back in April but finally we seem close to having it done. What took so long was that for reasons which completely escape us, we’d a terrible job getting a builder to even come and look at it. In fact, before we left for the summer we couldn’t get any at all and when we got back in September Wendy had pretty much worked our way through the phone book before we managed to get a couple to come out. Of course,... Read more

If you could, would you actually want to live forever'

From Foreign Perspectives, 2 year ago, Read 0 times. Similar articles

Leaving aside the religious approach, supposing that someday it becomes possible for people to live forever, would you actually want to' In principle I would have always said that my answer would surely be “yes” but one of the odder Star Trek episodes has me thinking about that. For a first premise, the assumption is that in living forever you’d want to live in a healthy state ie no sliding downhill into nursing home territory as we see these days when people get old.... A busy day catching up on things

From Foreign Perspectives, 2 year ago, Read 0 times. Similar articles

When you’re trying to run a life in two different countries like we are at the moment there’s something of a nightmare in terms of administration load that can backup really fast. This morning has been one of the days when I’ve tried to make major inroads with it all. Sadly the piles are still there but at least a number of important things have been sorted out this morning. For a start there’s a heap of communication that needed done re selling our place in France. The... Read more

Wow ? Christmas is just round the corner!

From Foreign Perspectives, 2 year ago, Read 0 times. Similar articles

It hardly seems any time at all since we were packing up last January and making a start to moving back to the UK and now Christmas is only a matter of weeks away. As usual, we’ve not yet really gotten going on our Christmas letter that goes along with the cards that we send out to far flung relatives. Also, as per normal the first of theirs has just turned up and, of course, it’s from Faye in Canada. In previous years we needed to be a whole lot more organised with the Christmas... Read more

How complete should a holiday destination be'

From Foreign Perspectives, 2 year ago, Read 0 times. Similar articles

Most people are still in search of their ideal holiday spot I’m sure. But what is “ideal” anyway' Obviously it should take into account your interests and those of the group which you’re travelling with. But is it enough to consider each of those individually' What if there was a single spot that took account of all possible interests' Argueably, orlando vacations would be very close to allowing for all possible interests. Granted, not quite in a single spot but in a... Read more

Looking for binoculars'

From Foreign Perspectives, 2 year ago, Read 0 times. Similar articles

You probably associate binoculars almost exclusively with birdwatching and indeed there are loads of people running around with “bird watching binoculars”. What you probably don’t consider is that binoculars are ideal for a whole lot of different types of astronomy too. In fact, if you’re starting out with night sky observing, chances are that you’d be better off getting a decent pair of binoculars than a telescope. Every year, without fail, I get a little e-mail... Started planning your Hogmanay trip to Edinburgh yet'

From Foreign Perspectives, 2 year ago, Read 0 times. Similar articles

It’s hard to believe that Hogmanay is just around the corner. Obviously for such a popular event much of the accommodation has already been booked months ago but there’s still a chance of finding somewhere decent if you don’t hang about. What’s it like then though' Think of Mardi Gras only in a colder climate and you might get some idea of the sheet quantity of activities that are going on throughout the city at that time. Street theatre is thick on the ground as are... Read more

Some good signs on the financial front

From Foreign Perspectives, 2 year ago, Read 0 times. Similar articles

Although they can be annoying, it does seem to be a good sign that the people trying to sell you credit cards are back in the shopping centres again and those annoying teatime calls trying to do the same have restarted too. I imagine that there are all kinds of grand things that the economists are saying these days about when we should be starting to get out of this recession but I think the banks trying to push more credit onto us must be amongst the clearest and most easily understood sign of...
