The Complete Moving House Checklist: An 8-Week Plan

A good moving plan reduces last-minute decisions. This eight-week framework gives every important job a sensible home, while leaving room for exchange and completion dates that may still change.

Eight to six weeks before

Start with a moving budget covering removals, packing materials, storage, cleaning, childcare or pet care, insurance and a contingency. If your completion date is not fixed, ask removal firms how provisional bookings and date changes work before paying a deposit.

Walk through every room and decide what will move with you. Selling, donating or recycling unwanted belongings early can reduce packing time and may change the size of removal vehicle you need.

  • Create one folder for quotes, contracts and reference numbers
  • List valuable, fragile and unusually large items
  • Check access, parking and lift restrictions at both properties
  • Ask insurers when buildings and contents cover should begin or change

Five to three weeks before

Book the services you are confident you will need, but read cancellation terms carefully. Begin packing items that are not used every day and label boxes with both the destination room and a short contents description.

Create a change-of-address list covering banks, insurers, employers, schools, healthcare providers, subscriptions and official records. Do not rely on mail redirection as the only way to update important organisations.

  • Tell utility and broadband providers about the move
  • Plan Council Tax changes with the relevant councils
  • Arrange Royal Mail redirection if wanted
  • Prepare a separate file for keys, identification and completion documents

The final fortnight

Confirm the removal plan, contact details, arrival windows and payment arrangements. Use up food that will not travel well, back up important digital files and take photographs of valuable items before packing.

Prepare an essentials box that travels with you rather than in the removal vehicle. Include medicines, chargers, basic toiletries, cleaning supplies, drinks, snacks, bedding, a change of clothes and anything children or pets will need immediately.

  • Defrost appliances if the manufacturer requires it
  • Confirm who will read meters and collect keys
  • Keep prohibited removal items separate
  • Share the moving-day plan with everyone involved

Moving day and the first week

Before leaving, check cupboards, lofts, sheds and garages. Record meter readings with photographs where safe to do so, secure windows and doors, and hand over keys as agreed.

At the new home, photograph meter readings and any unexpected condition before unpacking. Find the stopcock, consumer unit and emergency contacts. Update the electoral register and check that Council Tax, utilities, insurance and postal arrangements have started correctly.

  • Keep valuables and documents with you
  • Check delivered items against your inventory
  • Report damage promptly under the removal firm's terms
  • Test smoke and carbon-monoxide alarms
